International students who are permitted to work in Canada may occasionally discover that their study permit does not specifically indicate that they are allowed to “accept employment” or “work.”
In this instance, the student’s study permission must be amended before they may begin employment in Canada. Applying for an Amendment to the Record of Landing, Confirmation of Permanent Residence, or Temporary Resident Document is the process known as this one. IMM 1436 is the code for this form.
Note: Only errors on documents made by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) may result in requests for permit revisions. If your permit is valid as is, you cannot request an amendment to address changes requested by a temporary resident (student or worker).

Qualifications
In order for an international student to be qualified for a work authorization modification on their study permit, they need to:
- possess the right to employment in Canada at the time of issuance of their study permit
- possess a study permit without the necessary terms or work-related statements
For instance, the study permit can falsely claim that an overseas student is not allowed to work off-campus or that they are not allowed to work in Canada. Furthermore, no work-related remarks or conditions may be included in a study permit that has to be amended.
Broad Details
International students who wish to apply for an amendment are advised to do so as soon as possible since their permit must meet certain requirements in order for them to be able to work in Canada. A student cannot obtain a Social Insurance Number (SIN) in any other way.
The application is totally free and may take different amounts of time to finish. It is recommended that applicants check the IRCC website for anticipated processing time frames. expected processing times on IRCC’s website.
Step 1: Compile Records
Compiling the necessary paperwork, which will eventually be delivered to IRCC, is necessary in order to submit this application for a study permit modification. The most recent version of this application, available on the IRCC website, will come with a document checklist (more on that later).
Candidates need to make sure they attach all five of the following documents:
- Acceptance Letter
- Enrollment Letter
- The passport
- Identity Issued by the Gov
- Initial Research Authorization
Step 2: Complete the Application
The most recent Request to Amend the Record of Landing, Confirmation of Permanent Residence, or Valid Temporary Resident Documents [IMM 1436] form must always be downloaded from the IRCC website by those seeking amendments.
Before being mailed to the IRCC, forms need to be printed, filled out, and manually signed.
A document checklist is attached to this form; it has to be printed out and sent with the amendment application.

Applications for study permit amendments should ideally be delivered to the Operations Support Center in Ottawa using a trackable mail service.
You may find out when the IRCC has received your amendment application by using a trackable mailing service. This is significant since the IRCC never confirms receipt of an application to alter a student’s permission.
Regularly mail amendment applications to the following address, even if they are forwarded to the same building in both cases:

On the other hand, applications for couriered amendments should be sent to:

Step 4: Get Your New Study Permit and Examine It
If an adjustment to their study permit is granted, Canadian foreign students will get their new document by mail at the address provided on their amendment application.
Students who have just obtained a fresh permission are encouraged to check that it now expressly states that they “may accept employment” or “may work.”
Note: Specific terms pertaining to the student’s unique permit will always follow these declarations, such as “may work… 20 hours on campus” or “may accept employment… off campus.”
Additionally, international students need to save a digital copy of their new permission right away and keep it somewhere safe and easily accessible.
